Before thinking of applying for a student grant, it makes sense to sort out some of the common requirements for grants.  Specifically, one must be able to show sufficient financial need for the grant (except for certain loan programs).  One must also acquire/have a high school diploma or accreditation of similar sort.  Another requirement is that one must be working towards a college degree or a similar accredited accomplishment.  There is also the requirement of being either a US citizen or an eligible noncitizen.  The applicant must also have a valid social security number, along with consistent, satisfactory academic results.  Moreover, one should make sure that he does not have outstanding student loans.  Additionally, the applicant must certify that he will only use the grant money for academic purposes, and he must be a resident of the area in which the grant is available.

A point of interest is the definition of “financial need.”  Different foundations have “income ceilings” that are the key determinants on whether an applicant will or will not receive a student grant.  Some grant foundations, however, merely lower the grant amount if a certain income ceiling is not met.

The applicant also needs several documents such as social security number, driver’s license, income tax returns, bank statements, and investment records.

It is also advisable for students to apply early for grants in order to give time for the foundations to properly scrutinize every candidate and give the grant to the most deserving applicant.  Another recommendation is for students to complete their tax return in order to heighten their chances of gaining favor from the boards.

Application

The most common way of applying for a student grant is through the use of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid Website (FAFSA) at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.  Most accredited grant donors accept direct online applications from the site.

Before submitting a grant application, one must verify his GPA in order to gain favor and trust from the grant foundation.

Application deadlines usually happen during the transition between June and July.  This year’s application period ended on July 1st, 2008, while the next application period ends on June 30th, 2009.

Types Of Grants

Different foundations have different levels of grants that usually vary with regard to the GPA required to apply for and receive the grant.

First class grants usually cover tuition expenses and other related expenses, as well.  These grants usually require the best grades – preferably higher than a 3.50 GPA.  However, there are variants of first class grants that are usually attainable by students who have a GPA that is near 3.00.

Second class grants cover the expensive books that usually go along with university studies.  It is common to see students who had a 2.00 GPA who have attained this type of grant.

There are also different types of grants that give allowances to students who want to educate themselves in vocational studies and other similar courses.  These allowances are usually very large and commonly cover tuition expenses, as well as other school-related expenses.  There also existed grants that helped education majors with their dreams to become teachers, but they have since been discontinued in selected foundations.  However, there are still some that offer this service.

For specific jobs, there are also several grant options available.  In California’s Cal Grant™, for example, there are specific grants for those who want to become nurses, national guards, policemen, and child developers.

Benefits

The benefits of grants are mainly monetary.  Students are not simply allowed to study; they are allowed to focus on their education.  At times, it can be taxing for students to take a part-time job or even worry about family finances while being bothered by everything that the university asks of its students.

The grant can be any type of grant and prove to be useful.  A simple book grant can save nearly a thousand dollars in a lot of colleges in the country, while a tuition grant can be a life-changing achievement.

Applying for a grant is definitely worth all the hassle and time that it demands from its applicants.  It is not just the wonderful possibility of education that is offered, but the even more wonderful opportunity of education with fewer distractions than the normal student.

Recommended Grant Foundations And Helpful Websites

As mentioned earlier, one of the most reputable grant foundations is the California Student Aid Commission’s CalGrant™.  They can be found at http://www.csac.ca.gov/doc.asp?id=904, and all the required information is already on the website.
Another website worth checking for more specific requirements is the FAFSA™.  The general reminders can be found at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/before003a.htm, and the main page contains more specific features about grants.

A notable yet specific website for medical studies is the New York Academy of Medicine™ at http://www.nyam.org/grants/student.shtml.  The school offers five different types of grants for students who can attain monetary help just for being excellent students.
